"In our last newsletter, we mentioned we have a bespoke pension review service that we promote as a standalone service to our normal financial planning services. Many of our clients have already taken advantage of this service and are seeing good returns on their pensions.

When the bulk of older style pensions were taken out investment choice was limited to normally a balanced, property, with profits or equity fund. This along with sometimes high charges and a lack of active management after the pension was sold has lead to a large number of pensions that have not performed well leaving many people with a shortfall in income to fund their retirement.

The danger is, if pensions are not reviewed and well managed on a regular basis, you may not achieve the financial security you expect in retirement. Research has shown the funds in most pension plans are not actively managed by a financial adviser, most pensions are not managed with suitable asset allocation or thought to risk profile and many people are not getting value for money by paying higher charges for the most basic of administration."

DFA exhibit at DPAS “Further Growing Your Practice”

“We recently exhibited at the DPAS “Further Growing Your Practice” in Bristol. This was our first full day exhibition and was extremely enjoyable, albeit hard work on the feet!!. We had the opportunity to listen to the key speakers, Ashley Latter and Sheila Scott, who were very enlightening. We also ran a prize draw for a Luxury Gourmet Hamper, which was very popular and the lucky winner was Dr Becky Denny of Twenty2 Dental in Weston Super Mare."

The Anatomy of a Recession

I was having a conversation recently with an acquaintance about the likely effects of the current recession on the dental profession as a whole. That lead on to a discussion as to which practice we considered might be more at risk in the current climate and then what actions could be taken by all of us to ensure that we minimise the downside in an extremely difficult year, possibly the worst the world economies have know since the 1930’s.

I believe for most people dentistry is an essential purchase. In the general practice a significant number of patients are paying under £200 a year and therefore saving that amount to end up with toothache is not an option. There is plenty of evidence to show that in a recession individuals will spend more money on themselves and where patients are buying high value treatments there are plenty of options for them to either spread the payment or take out low cost finance.

The total spend on UK dentistry as a whole continues to rise exponentially and when we review our existing client base there are plenty of practices that are very busy and acquiring new patients at the rate of 40-60 per month. I also believe last year there was a great deal of fruitless discussion as to whether we were or were not going to have a recession, now it is patently obvious that we are going to have one, people are just getting on with their lives and buying what they need or want. Having said all that, the days of putting up a sign “dental practice” and knowing that sufficient people will walk through the door are over.
